Selfies Could Save Your Life!

2014-09-29

Selfies have become an integral part of our lives. So much so, that ‘selfie’ was added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2013 and even named word of the year! We’ve seen selfies of all sorts, from no make-up selfies for a good cause to pouting with Pope Francis. But, did you know that a selfie could save your life?

According to New Scientist, there’s a computer programme that can identify thousands of rare disorders through analysing pictures of faces.

This software was developed to help family doctors and general paediatricians to make a preliminary diagnosis on a patient where a test is yet to be developed.

The computer analyses facial features like lips, noses, eyes and brows and looks for any disturbing variations that could result from a rare disease. The programme also checks these pictures against others in the database in order to make predictions on a patient’s condition.

The team behind this development hopes to expand the programme’s capabilities to include full frontal images and not just be limited to faces. They also hope to one day make this available as a smartphone app!

So the next time someone complains about the number of selfies you take, tell them it’s for your health ;)
